Literally We the People Spoke

Between #RickyRenuncia and #RickyRenunció there's a world of courage, tenacity, determination and anger that fueled a movement that made more than history, it marked the beginning of taking power back and there is no turning back.

Hashtags helped to get the word out around the world while some wondered what it was all about. Those more than merely curious learned that leaked chats (aka #RickyLeaks 889 pages Telegram chat by CPI) revealed callous disregard, disrespect on behalf of those in charge or running Puerto Rico. I would say governing yet running is better suited as they were running what felt like a man's club cloaked in mirrors and deceit.

Once all the chat pages were made public the atmosphere
on the island drastically changed. Puerto Rico became laser focused on one thing and one thing only, removing the governor and his possy from office. His candid participation in the chat lent for his own atrocious words to set the stage for his political demise.  His resignation arrived after 11 days of continuous protests including a historic National March where all brought water, a sign and wore comfortable sneakers and even danced in the rain because nothing was going to make them stop. They brought their energy and hope expressing through solidarity and song that they'd had enough and that change across the board was the only thing they wanted and weren't going to stop until they got it.

Those not on the island did what they could to share the message whether it was calling family and friends back in Puerto Rico to let them know they had our support, or talking to our children about the it or on spreading the word on social media and writing post sharing links etc. We yearned to stand shoulder to shoulder under one flag one message one mission to force change and we found a way to do that even from afar.

It was a pivotal chapter in Puerto Rico's  history that I will never forget. My mom couldn't believe how fast it all came about. People of her generation for the most part quietly endured for the sake of peace, kept their head down and only opened up about politics when surrounded in their tight knit social circles. Opinions on what type of leadership Puerto Rico needed differed and as heated as those conversations may have turned they served as an outlet that pseldom provoked change.

This generation shared opinions, decided enough was enough on behalf of their peers, their parents and grandparents generations  and beyond, that it was time to remind everyone that they have the power to effect meaningful change and that is exactly what took place.

Everyone had a roll in ensuring the message came across clear. It was rotoundly  heard. On the July 24th 2019 just before midnight the governor announced his resignation to be effective on August 2, 2019.

To say there was joy hearing him say he was resigning is an understatement. There were tears of relief,  tears of pure happiness, tears for the future, that FINALLY they will be prosperity for the whole island not just for the elite. A future where respect is demanded and received. That night along with elation there were hugs between the many protesters and the police to help heal the past tension filled nights that they each lived through and surved without any fatalities. Was there violence? Yes. Was there use of excessive force? Certainly. Expect that what went wrong will not be repeated as long as this generation has a say in the matter. Just remember there are those that will incite just for the sake of flamming the flames against a cause or a group of people.

Photos, videos and drawings captured much of the humanity passion and strength of a people victorious people celebrating their triumph over being used, disrespected and discarded. Literally "We the people" spoke and they were heard!
